On October 13, 2026, organizers of the 49th Mill Valley Film Festival 2026 announced the winners of the festival's Audience Awards, following the conclusion of its 11-day programme on October 11.
The festival attracted more than 40,000 attendees from across the San Francisco Bay Area and presented films, panel discussions, filmmaker appearances and special events featuring creative talent from 45 countries.
The Overall Audience Favorite award went to Tenzing, directed by Jennifer Peedom and starring Tom Hiddleston. The narrative feature audience award was presented to Elsinore, directed by Simon Stone, while When a Witness Recants, directed by Dawn Porter, received the documentary audience award.
The New Directors audience prize went to Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson for Wicker, starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård.
Beyond its competitive programme, the festival demonstrates the continuing importance of audience engagement in cultural event management. Its combination of international film premieres, educational discussions, professional networking and community participation positions it as both an entertainment destination and a platform for emerging filmmakers.
The event also highlights how regional film festivals can build international recognition while maintaining strong connections with local audiences.
