On November 1, 2026, Mexico's Día de Muertos celebrations began their main commemorative period amid new visitor restrictions on Janitzio Island in Michoacán.

For the first time, tourists are prohibited from entering the island's cemetery during the November 1–2 ceremonies. Access is reserved for local families following ground damage and ongoing restoration work near the historic burial site.

Authorities have established a panoramic walkway allowing visitors to observe the traditional candlelit ceremonies without entering the cemetery.

The restrictions come as Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations attract increasing international tourism, raising questions about visitor pressure, heritage protection and community access.

For cultural event organizers, Janitzio highlights the importance of balancing tourism development with site safety, cultural authenticity and respect for local traditions.
